From photography to fashion.

Senior Makena Costlow wants to be a movie director; she never thought she'd be designing clothes. But she combined her brother's lack of fashion sense with her own passion for photography - and Makena Clothing was born.

How did you start making your t-shirt line?

When my brother was going into freshman year, I wanted to give him a makeover for high school, and I thought that he needed cooler shirts. I thought it would be cool to make my own.

How would you describe your line's look?

They're geared toward teenage boys in high school, and the look is like Pac-Sun or Zumiez. It's kind of skater-ish.

How do you make the shirts?

I usually go on Pac-Sun's website and look at t-shirts that have pictures on them. Then I usually go through pictures I take on vacation and pick what looks good. I use Photoshop, then order the shirts from websites.

Where do you sell them?

I sell them mostly at my dad's animal hospital, where I work as a receptionist. I ask my dad a lot about what to do; he's also kind of my business manager. He'll tell me what to do and give me advice.
